Fun day at the cable

Today we had perfect weather at the cable. Sun was shining and the water was glass. Dylan Mitchell came through to take some photo's and film, seen as though he is injured and can't ride. Here are some of the shots he got of us:

SA Boat Pro Wakeboard Tour- Stop 3 / SA Champs

SA Champs was held at Milnerton Aquatic Club on the 23-24 March 2013. We were greeted with the dreaded Cape doctor (the typical south easter wind). The lake looked like an ocean with a 1-2 foot offshore beach break. Us wakeboarders definitely had an advantage over the wakeskaters. Luckily our boards are strapped to our feet.

Friday afternoon wasn't much fun at all as it was super cold. The competition started on time at 8.30am on Saturday morning with the novice division getting the more favourable/ less windy conditions. As the day progressed the wind picked up. The boat also seemed to take strain under the less than favourable conditions, and gave us problems twice. As a result, the comp ended early and a couple of the divisions were pushed over to Sunday.

keeping warm on the boat

On sunday we had even more unfavourable conditions and by lunch time the wind was pumping. The boat unfortunately broke again... which resulted in the comp running 2 hours late.

Even under the conditions, i was fortunate to stick a clean run and managed to take the title of SA champ 2013. so happy :)

Even though the conditions were bad, it was still a fun comp! Thanks to all the riders and organizers, good way to end the boating season :)

A few months ago, Bianca came to Blue Rock and spent hours lying in the water, taking pictures of us. Here are some of the shots she got of us:

CASA Tour Stop 2

CASA pro tour stop 2 took place at Warmbaths Resort in JHB. Every year there is a cable stop in Warmbaths and it is always most fun because when you are not on the water, you are in the warm pools and on the slides. The other cool thing is that everyone stays together in the same resort so you are all together.

This is the one comp that my mom always attends with us. My brothers, my mom and I flew up together on Thursday night and stayed over in Pretoria for the first night.

My mom, my brothers and me at the airport

Friday morning we were up early, ate breakfast and then we were off the Warmbaths. It was about a 2 hour drive that took longer than expected due to traffic. When we arrived in Warmbaths, we headed straight to the cable to have a ride. We spent Friday night in the warm pools.

Saturday was qualifiers as usual. Once everyone was done riding, it was straight to the slides and pools. Saturday night was an early night for me. I was pretty tired from all the riding.

Sunday morning, we started fairly early with the finals. I had a good run, landed everything i had  planned, so I was happy :)

Melissa Colborne- final run

I was stoked to win the Open Ladies division. Candice Bacon came second and Bryanna Motepe 3rd. So nice to see all 3 Liquid Force Ladies on top :)

SA Boat Pro Wakeboard Tour- Stop 2

The second boat pro tour stop took place from the 1-3 March at North End Lake in Port Elizabeth. Myself, my brother and my mom did a little road trip to the comp. My brother and I took a few days off school. On Thursday, the 28th of Febuary, we drove up to Knysna and stayed over there for the night. We stayed in a Lodge on the lagoon. Friday morning we were up bright and early and thanks to Tom Kellerman, we were able to go have a wakeboard sesh in the Wilderness.

Christopher and I before our ride

We then went back to lodge to pack our stuff and drove to North End Lake. It was freezing cold there and the wind was blowing but we still all did our practise run.

Saturday was qualifiers. Weather was not ideal for the wakeskaters but it was fine for the wakeboarders. I had a good run and I managed to qualify 1st.

Melissa Colborne- after qualifying run

Sunday morning I was up early, comp started at 8. I managed to stick a clean final run so i was happy with my riding. When they announced that I was the winner of the Open Ladies division, i was super stoked-woohoo :) Candice Bacon came second and Deidre van Niekerk came 3rd.

After the comp, we drove to Plett and stayed in The Dunes Hotel for the night. We enjoyed pizza for dinner and the next morning we were on our way back home. We stopped at the Knysna Waterfront for a quick breakfast.  On our way home, we were all craving a Wimpy waffle so decided to prolong our trip and first stopped at the Mall to satisfy our craving- it was really worth the stop!

Lifestyle shoot with Bianca Asher

I recently did a lifestyle photoshoot with Bianca. I had fun with her and she got some cool shots. Here are a few of them:

Thank you Bianca! :)

Ultimate X

On the 16th of February I competed at Ultimate X.  This year I was more than honoured to be invited to compete in this event especially because I was the first lady in South Africa to be invited. Only 10 riders are invited from each discipline.

Ultimate X is an extreme sports event that takes place yearly at the V & A Waterfront. The event involves extreme sports namely: Wakeboarding, FMX, BMX and skating. The top riders in the country are invited to compete in the event. Not only is it a competition with big prize money but it also goes about the entertainment for spectators.

I was part of the live TV show Expresso on Friday morning the 15th of February along with a rider from each of the other disciplines as well as the owner of the event, Markus Museler. We were all interviewed and we spoke about the event. This was a great experience for me and I got the opportunity to meet some really cool people. Check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=wSdKQKJDcyI

That afternoon, we could all go and have a practice session on the new 2.0 system that Tich Mitchell had set up for us. A huge thanks goes to Tich for making this possible. I was super nervous at first but after practice, excited for the event :)

There were loads of spectators on Saturday. I had a fun ride and overall it was a successful event.

Once again i'm proud of  my brother Jason. He killed it on the obstacles and came second overall :)

Jason Colborne - 2nd place

SA Boat Pro Wakeboard Tour- Stop 1

The first boat pro tour stop took place at the beginning of Febuary. The event was held at Emerald Resort and Casino on the Vaal River in JHB. I had so much fun riding and chilling with the coolest people. This was the first time I had ridden behind boat since nationals last year so I was pretty nervous.

I flew to JHB on Thursday night with Marius Labuschagne and spent the night at his moms place. The next morning we headed off early for the Vaal. We got to ride behind his dads boat on the Vaal and then later we went to where the comp was being held at Emerald Resort for our practice ride.

At the airport with Marius

The first night a bunch of us went for pizza. I have never ever in my life eaten a pizza with so much cheese and toppings on it. After pizza we went to play ten pin bowling. I came stone last- definitely the worst ten pin bowler around.

CASA Tour Stop 1

At the end of January, I took part in CASA pro tour stop 1 which was the first cable comp of the year. The event took place at StokeCity wake park in Midrand. I flew up to JHB a few days early with both my brothers. We got some fun riding in before the comp started on the Saturday.

Friday night was full moon so Bianca Asher decided to do a night shoot with us. She got some really sick photo's.
